Let’s start to understand what exactly is Epoxy Floor Coating. First, Epoxy is the family of basic components or cured end products of epoxy resins. Epoxy resins, also known as polyepoxides, are a class of reactive prepolymers and polymers which contain epoxide groups, so the epoxide functional group is also collectively called epoxy. The IUPAC name for an epoxide group is an oxirane.

There are many benefits that come with using an epoxy floor coating, compared to using other types of resins for flooring. Most importantly, epoxy is known to be the highest strength resin in the industry.

What are the benefits of Epoxy Floor Coating

In general, this solution offers the following advantages

  • Epoxy floors are resistant to a large number of chemicals such as solvents and acids.
  • The floors are decorative. Epoxy floors are available in many different colors and designs. It is possible to create a concrete look or to sprinkle the floor with flakes.
  • Because of the fast application, there is only a minimal work interruption.
  • Epoxy floors are very easy to maintain. After all, the floors are seamless and liquid-tight and therefore easy to clean benefiting hygiene.
  • Epoxy floors combine well with underfloor heating. They are very sustainable. In combination with underfloor heating, you save energy and you no longer have radiators’ insight saving space. The floor has no seams or edges, and it completely blends into the space.
  • Robust: This makes epoxy floors suitable for heavy use and mechanical loads, such as forklift traffic in warehouses, workshops, and production areas.

What do you need to know to choose the right Epoxy Flooring System

Before making a purchase decision you need to know and understand the following terms and definitions

  • Yellowing
  • Pot Life
  • Working Life
  • Cure Time
  • Metallic Epoxy Floor Coating
  • Clear Epoxy Floor Coating

Yellowing

First, the question is: Why does Epoxy Turns Yellow?. Epoxy resin turns a yellow hue due to exposure to a myriad of elements. High temperatures, excessive amounts of water, and UV light can all cause the epoxy to change from clear to yellow in tint. Once the epoxy has turned yellow, there is not much that can be done to reverse the discoloration process; so, it is possible to reduce its impact and prevent the epoxy from yellowing even further.

However, it will also depend on the quality of the product, not all forms of epoxy turn yellow, and it is possible to purchase specially formulated epoxy resins

Pot Life

“Pot Life” is a term used for two-pack (or multi-pack) coatings that cure through a chemical reaction, such as epoxies and most polyurethanes. These systems consist of a resin base component (often called the “Part A”) and a catalyst or hardener component (often called the “Part B”). When these components are mixed together a chemical reaction starts that leads to the curing of the paint.

Working life

Working life or working time is defined by the resin supplier to advise the customer how much time and temperature they have to work with the material, before it reaches such a high state of viscosity that it cannot be properly worked with to produce an acceptable part. The working life like any other epoxy flooring coating depends on the brand you choose to use.

Cure Time

Curing time is the time length recommended before subjecting your finished project to daily use.

Epoxy cure time is typically seven days. Of course, there are variations, but if you want a rule of thumb, so one week is your answer. While it takes seven days for epoxy to cure, your floor may be dry enough to walk on after 12 hours or so and ready for light use after 24 hours.

Metallic Epoxy Floor Coating

A metallic epoxy floor coating is quite simply a low yellowing epoxy, with a metallic pigment mixed within. In other words, tiny, almost glitter-like pigments are mixed into an epoxy resin and then poured onto the floor or substrate. When these pigments become agitated with a paintbrush or roller, they gather, separate, twist and turn to reflect light at different angles. Eventually, the epoxy hardens and the metallic pigments are locked into place and give a three-dimensional, swirly look.

Clear Epoxy Floor Coating

Clear epoxy coatings are usually applied as an additional protection layer on top of an epoxy or polyurethane floor. They can serve several purposes such as scratch resistance, protecting flakes and other aggregates, as well as general protection from dirt pick up.
